Marc Benziane

*Name & Publication Note: My legal name is Mohammed Benziane, but I use Marc professionally and for all current/future publications. Previous papers and my PhD thesis are registered under Mustapha and Mohammed, respectively (all linked to the same ORCID).

Research Experience

Postdoc

Mines Paris PSL

Fontainebleau, France

Current - 2025

  • Project: Asymptotic preconditioner for extended least squares migration and FWI:
    • Methodology: Development of asymptotic preconditioners for 3D extended least squares RTM based on the validated 2D implementation.
    • HPC: Accelerated 2D/3D wavefield kernels through concurrent wavefield solvers (forward, scattered, dipole, monopole) and time decimation with windowed sinc interpolation to minimize memory use. Ensured NUMA-affinity and cache-optimization for fast memory access.
    • Software: Refactored a legacy codebase into a modular, Git-versioned architecture driven by external namelists and user-provided files, eliminating hardcoded dependencies.
    • Numerical Optimization: Developed a custom reverse-communication optimization library in Fortran, implementing regular and preconditioned solvers (L-BFGS, NLCG, Steepest Descent, and regular quasi-Newton BFGS/DFP).

PhD. researcher

Université Grenoble Alpes

Grenoble, France

2025 - 2022

  • Project: Receiver extension strategies for 3D time-domain FWI:
    • Developed and implemented novel time-dependent receiver extension strategies for 3D time-domain Full-Waveform Inversion (FWI) to mitigate cycle-skipping.
    • Integrated these algorithms directly into the core of the SEISCOPE FWI engine (TOYxDAC_TIME) for High-Performance Computing (HPC) environments.
    • Implemented a new reverse-communication optimization library into the SEISCOPE Optimization Toolbox, including global/stochastic algorithms (MCMC, various Simulated Annealing methods, and Particle Swarm Optimization).
    • Validated the newly developed methods on large-scale 3D industrial benchmarks, using an Ocean Bottom Cable (OBC) field dataset from the North Sea.

Industry Experience

Geophysical Engineer

GeoEXplo

Algiers, Algeria

2020 - 2017

  • Geophysical data acquisition, processing, and interpretation: Refraction seismic, Cross-hole/down-hole seismic, MASW, ReMi, Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT), Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES), Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), and Well logging (resistivity, SP, gamma ray, caliper, optical and acoustic borehole imaging).
  • ALT & MSI equipment and WellCAD software: Managed sales, trained new and existing clients, and provided technical support across North Africa (mainly Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia).
